Al Capone Does My Shirts

For the next four weeks, we will read and study Gennifer Choldenko's award-winning book, Al Capone Does My Shirts.

Summary from Ms. Choldenko's website:
When Moose's family moves to Alcatraz so his father can work as a guard and his sister can attend a special school in San Francisco, Moose has to leave his friends and his winning baseball team behind. But it's worth it, right? If his sister, Natalie, can finally get help, maybe his family will finally be normal.

But as it turns out, life on Alcatraz is much more complicated than even Moose would have predicted.

His dad is so busy, he's never around. His mom's preoccupation with Natalie's condition (today it would be called autism) is even worse now that there's no extended family to help with her tantrums and constant needs. And of course, there's never enough money.

When Moose meets Piper, the cute daughter of the Warden, he knows right off she's trouble. But she's also strangely irresistible. All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parent's expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

What's been going on in Room 145?

Well, a lot acutally!  Below are some updates of what we've been up to.  It has been a busy spring.
High Fives
Every Friday our students take "Quick Checks" to see how well they've mastered their objectives in Reading and Math.  Below are some pictures of Mr. Barnett, Vice Principal, giving the kids their "High Fives" for scoring an 80 or higher.  At the end of the 6 weeks, students will trade in their High Five stickers for prizes!
Go Dymond!

Valentine's Day
We celebrated Valentine's Day with a party on Friday, February 11.  Also, Miss Rogers was lucky enough to get a special delivery from someone special, and everyone enjoyed the lillies!

Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area
Or LLELA for short!  We took a field trip to LLELA in March to explore various habitats.  Below is a slideshow of our pictures.

Free Enterprise on the Frontier
Students created their own businesses, hoping to make a profit selling everything from covered wagons to sewing supplies.  Below are our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  Their projects were on display in the library!

Draw a Habitat!

On March 21 and 22, Britain 4th Graders will be visiting LLELA (Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area).  On our field trip, we will be observing and interacting with various habitats.  We will see aquatic habitats, or water habitats.  We will also explore a prairie habitat, with flat land, tall grass, and few trees.  Finally, we will explore a home from the 1800's, just like Mina would have lived in!

Before we go, have fun creating your own imaginary habitat here!
